Ratri (pronounced raa-three) is the Sanskrit word for night. 

It ultimately signifies the restful time of day, when the stars are brighter, the moon rises, and one’s imagination slips into a more peaceful state of being. The name came to us from remembering the night skies of our motherlands – the moment of looking up to the heavens and seeing a full sky, completely illuminated by stars. Nighttime stretches outward endlessly. It is vast and cannot be contained. 

The potential of South Asian artists is just as boundless and bright. 

Ratri Literary Magazine seeks work that exists across languages, borders, and histories, that is daring and deeply felt. We want to push beyond what is presumed of the South Asian identity. 

It is our hope to carve space for South Asian brilliance.
